Dancing Queen is the twenty-sixth studio album past American singer Cher, released by Warner Bros. Records on September 28, 2018. Information technology is Cher's first album in five years, post-obit Closer to the Truth (2013). The anthology contains comprehend versions of songs recorded past Swedish pop group ABBA, with the title referencing their 1976 song "Dancing Queen". The album follows Cher's appearance in the 2018 musical film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, based on the music of ABBA.[2] [3]

The album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number three on the US Billboard 200 with kickoff-week sales of 153,000 album-equivalent units, becoming Cher's highest debut sales calendar week for an album in the The states. The album also peaked within the top x of charts in another 18 countries, with nine of those existence top five entries. As of March 2019, Dancing Queen has been certified gold by Music Canada and silvery past BPI.

To promote the album, Cher embarked on the Hither We Go Again Bout, which began on September 21, 2018. It also marks her starting time worldwide tour since Living Proof: The Good day Tour.

Groundwork [edit]

Later on previously actualization in Mamma Mia! Here We Become Again, for which she recorded "Fernando" and "Super Trouper", Cher was inspired to practice an ABBA cover album.

While recording, Cher hinted on her Twitter account that she might be releasing an ABBA cover album. On July xvi, 2018, it was officially revealed in an interview with The Today Bear witness that the album would consist of ABBA covers. She further stated:

"After filming Mamma Mia! Hither We Go Again, I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking, 'Why not practise an anthology of their music?' The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I'm so happy with how the music came out. I'm really excited for people to hear it. It'southward a perfect time." —Cher

Cher likewise said that "[she has] always liked ABBA and saw the original Mamma Mia! musical on Broadway three times".

In add-on to that, Cher was asked about what people tin can expect from the album. She replied with maxim, "Information technology's not what you think of when you think 'ABBA', because [she] did it in a unlike way."

On August 9, 2018, it was announced that the album would be released on September 28, 2018.[4]

On August 8, 2018, Cher released a teaser of the album'due south offset single "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man Subsequently Midnight)" on her Twitter account.[5] The song was released the post-obit day.[6] People who pre-ordered the album on iTunes immediately received a digital re-create of the single. The vocal peaked at number iv on the Hot Trip the light fantastic toe Club Songs nautical chart. An extended version of "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" was released on September 14, 2018.[7]

The 2nd unmarried, "SOS" was released on Baronial 23, 2018.[8] It peaked at number 56 on the Scottish singles nautical chart.[9] A music video for the song was released on September xviii, 2018.[x]

"One of The states", was released as third and final single on September 21, 2018.[xi] On the same day, an animated video of a blue vinyl's B-side playing along with the song was released on Cher'south YouTube.[12]

Alive performances [edit]

Cher performed "SOS" at the Ellen Show in 2018.[xiii] On September xviii, 2019 Cher performed "Waterloo" at the season xiv finale of America's Got Talent, to promote the album and her Here Nosotros Get Again Tour.[fourteen]

Bout [edit]

A world tour, titled the Hither Nosotros Go Once more Bout, in back up of Dancing Queen, began on September 21, 2018, in Auckland, New Zealand. Information technology was officially announced on May 7, 2018.[15] [16] "Fernando", "Waterloo", and "SOS" were the only songs off the anthology Cher performed, however.

According to Metacritic, which calculated a weighted average score of 79 out of 100 from ten music critics, the album received "mostly favorable reviews".[19] Gay Star News gave the anthology a positive review, saying: "If she'd approached this collection of ABBA re-recordings with the seriousness of, say, George Michael on the excellent Songs from the Last Century, she'd accept been in large trouble. Instead, Dancing Queen is nigh fun, entertainment, dizzy abandonment. She knows how to delight a crowd, while also acknowledging the desires of her die-hard fans."[22] Marc Snetiker from Entertainment Weekly gave the album a favourable review, calling it Cher's "most significant release since 1998's Believe" and saying that "the album ender, 'I of Us,' is frankly one of Cher'southward best recordings in years."[21]

Nick Levine from Gay Times praised Cher's vocals, calling them "glorious [...] – still rich and wonderfully androgynous-sounding" and pointing out that they "drive each vocal from beginning to cease."[23] Rolling Rock 'southward Brittany Spanos commented that "the 72-year-former makes ABBA songs non only audio like they should've been written for her in the first place but like they firmly belong in 2018".[26] At Idolator, Mike Wass felt that "every track exudes the glitter, fun and nostalgia of a foretime era" and that "Dancing Queen, while disappointingly brief, covers all bases from dreamy disco moments and emotional ballads."[29]

In a positive review for The Guardian, it was noted that "occasionally Cher uses her trademark Motorcar-Tune like a crutch [...] just more often than not it acts equally a kind of interstellar portal that elevates Abba from the dancefloor to the cosmos."[27] In a review for The Times, Will Hodgkinson was less positive; he stated that the album delivered "exactly the results you would wait" and that "There's zilch to dislike, but also nothing to recommend across this being a fun, tacky choice for the Christmas political party."[thirty]

Rolling Stone placed Dancing Queen on fifth place of all pop albums released in 2018, as well every bit placing Cher'southward version of "The Name of the Game" as the 22nd all-time song of the year.[31] [32] The album's music video of "SOS" was ranked as the 18th best music video of 2018 by Paper.[33]

Commercial performance [edit]

In the Usa, the album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with start-week sales of 153,000 anthology-equivalent units, becoming Cher's highest debut sales for an anthology in the Us. It also ties the record for Cher's highest-charting solo album on that nautical chart, which she first reached when her anthology Closer to the Truth also debuted and peaked at number three. It went on to spend 8 weeks in the nautical chart.[35] Dancing Queen also debuted at number one on the US Top Album Sales chart with 150,000 pure copies, making it the biggest debut sales for a pop album past a female in the Us in 2018 and marking Cher's get-go number ane album on that chart. It went on to spend 25 weeks in the nautical chart.[36] On the US tastemaker albums chart, Dancing Queen debuted and peaked at number nine, staying in the chart for one week.[37] On the US current album sales chart, Dancing Queen peaked at #1 and spent 29 weeks on the nautical chart.[38] Dancing Queen ranked at number 193 on the Billboard 200 year end chart for 2018.

The anthology as well debuted at number ii in Canada, Cher'southward highest summit for a studio album at that place since 1998's Believe. Dancing Queen went on to be certified gold by Music Canada for sales of over 40,000 copies.
